Application Process to the Mission Training Center
Application: Each learner seeking any official certification must be recommended by his or her respective district, and must have a local mentor to help them with the practical aspects of the training. After an interview with the candidate and the mentor, the districts will recommend the applicant to the MTC. Candidates should also come to the district with the recommendation of a local pastor, congregation or mission entity.
Who may apply? People, 25 years of age or older, in any walk of life who feel a calling to do domestic mission work in the LCMS, or find themselves in a mission leader role in a local ministry, can apply to the MTC. Download applications above. Those who apply at the request of a district may take the courses either as part of their district lay training credential, as prerequisites for the seminary Special Ministry Program, or both.
Certification: Certification of learners for lay leadership credentials will be granted by each participating district.
Those who wish to receive college credit will be given 3 credits for each course when they apply to Concordia's Adult Degree Program.
Classes on each level of training consist of 15-20 hours of activity over the internet. Classes meet on Saturdays at three-week intervals. Classes may also be taken on weeknights through our partnership with LAP on the west coast. MTC and LAP courses are interchangeable for District, DELTO and Concordia certification.
Costs: Tuition cost per course is $175.00. For those applying to take a course through Concordia’s Adult Degree Program, the tuition is $525.00. Additional costs for books and local site fees may also be incurred. Recognizing the financial needs of some missionary candidates, provisions for underwriting some of the tuition cost may be possible through districts, local congregations and scholarships.
